Published on: 8 Nov 2017

MSc Real Estate

Property surveyors are at the heart of the property and construction industry. With an MSc in Real Estate from Nottingham Trent University (NTU), you could be in that position in just a year.

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)-accredited, one-year postgraduate conversion course is one of the quickest accredited routes to becoming a chartered surveyor.

NTU is a leading provider of property education in the UK. It has over 40 years’ experience developing successful property and surveying graduates, many of whom go on to work for major national and international companies such as Cushman & Wakefield, JLL, and Knight Frank. Highly regarded in industry, it holds accreditation from leading professional bodies and has many ongoing relationships with companies who provide opportunities such as live projects, site visits and internships.

But what could this mean for you?

Are you looking for a career change? Considering a career in the built environment? An MSc Real Estate degree from NTU is your fast-track route into the dynamic property industry. Accredited by RICS, successful completion of this degree satisfies the educational requirements for RICS and allows you to complete your Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) with an accredited company upon graduation. With two or three years’ work experience, you’ll then be able to take your RICS professional assessment interview to fulfil your APC.

Becoming chartered by the RICS is a key milestone in a surveyor’s professional development. It recognises your expertise in your field and can lead to exciting and highly rewarding employment opportunities.

What will the course provide?

You’ll learn about investment, development valuation, agency and property management, and gain real insights into the UK legal and planning systems. Through live projects with industry, UK study trips, and guest speakers from organisations such as Laing O’Rourke and Cushman & Wakefield, you’ll develop skills, knowledge and valuable contacts.

With the opportunity to go on a European study trip, you’ll also learn about international property markets and undertake projects set by international clients.

You’ll learn from teaching staff with significant experience in the property industry, enriching your learning experience. Their knowledge and networks mean you’ll benefit from real applied learning alongside exciting internship opportunities.

What if I don’t have a background in real estate?

Don't worry! The course is aimed at students from disciplines unrelated to real estate and construction. Students on the course come from a range of academic and professional backgrounds.  If you’re motivated to work in the industry, NTU can help you get there.

Take it from a graduate

MSc Real Estate graduate Anastassiya Borodina reflected: “Having studied business management for my undergraduate degree, I felt my knowledge was too broad and I was left without a specific set of skills to set me apart from other job seekers. I chose to study MSc Real Estate at NTU because I was interested in the dynamic real estate industry, and the vast array of pathways offered by the University.”

“I now have the specialist skills needed to kick-start my career in real estate. I know how to measure buildings, value properties, and use databases and Argus software. The intensive legal training on the course has also been invaluable, as it's important knowledge to have as a chartered surveyor.”

“My knowledge now definitely sets me apart from other jobseekers. It was a fantastic year!”
