Nicola Putt, Dalcour Maclaren HR Director, talks about how we became the only chartered surveyors to be on the Sunday Times Top 100 List

We Did It! We made The Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies To Work For List. Wow.

It was the first time we had entered and we didn’t think we stood a chance (secretly we hoped, of course). But it was more a case of wanting to understand how our employees felt, and the feedback they provided would be instrumental in shaping the direction of the company.

So, we were delighted when we found out that we had been awarded an ‘Extraordinary’ 3 stars from Best Companies, the engagement specialists that award the Michelin style stars, and the engine behind The Sunday Times Top 100 Lists. Three stars!

What areas did we excel in? Where do we need to do more? We were strong in leadership and training and the culture was something that was really appreciated. The feedback was fascinating and if truth be told, we had a good idea of what was working and why but it was interesting to see the hard data. The areas where we could improve were also highlighted and provided a real goal to strive for next year.

‘The DM Way’ (the company’s charter) is at the heart of our business and we hire people because they embody the values laid out here: Excellence, Trust, Pride, Progressive and Team Spirit. This is an award won by the team so it’s important that it is celebrated by everyone on #bestcompaniesday (March 3rd) when we will give something back to the employees and to our chosen charity.

The second surprise came this week as The Sunday Times prints its ‘Top 100 Lists’, we found out where we had come alongside all the other companies. We came in at 78! Let’s be clear, all companies on these lists are doing an amazing job and have a clear focus on employee engagement, management, culture and corporate responsibility. Important, vital, areas for being successful; So we were thrilled to be in such elite company.

Here’s how we are different: We are the only chartered surveyors on the list; So we want to shout it from the rooftops of barns and the tops of pylons across the UK. We did it and we are bursting with pride. We are a ‘Top 100 Small Company’ and ‘Extraordinary’ chartered surveyors.

Now we have to focus on next year!
