We are seeking the Head of Technical for an exciting and expanding residential developer for the London office. Reporting to the Director of Technical and Commercial, you will be managing the technical team.
My client is a residential property group with homes across London providing affordable, private and social rented homes, student, NHS and temporary accommodation, as well as supported housing and homes for older people. To manage the technical team, ensuring all sites within the department’s responsibility have the full design, engineering and technical information necessary to complete the design requirement to RIBA Stage 4 on time and within budget to form part of the tender pack information. Key decision maker on a day to day basis.  

Key Responsibilities

  • To manage the technical element of all project plans/briefs being managed by the team/region, ensuring RIBA Stage 3 and Stage 4 technical drawing packages, details and project plans are available to form tender packages on time
  • Provide necessary input and support to the planning team in terms of site optimisation, flat layouts and standardisation to ensure a smooth transfer through to the technical team once permission is granted
  • Ensure the department provide detailed technical assessments/reports and advice where required for land acquisition, compile the necessary reports and liaising with consultants when appropriate
  • To maintain and update records of design, including drawings, registers and reports throughout the design stage and take responsibility for checking and issuing design information
  • To ensure all Key dates Schedules produced by the team are technically realistic and efficient for the build/development programme
  • Chair Design Team and project team meetings as and when required
  • To visit sites as and when necessary during the pre-purchase, design and construction stages
  • To lead on the review and development of the departmental processes and guidelines, implanting innovative and effective solutions (where effective and commercially viable) which improve knowledge and service delivery    
  • To proactively liaise, support and work closely with colleagues, senior Managers and Directors to ensure the technical requirements are integrated within the planning and development of all major projects
  • To advise on, incorporate into development design and be responsible for, keeping up to date on legislative and building regulation changes as well as CDM (or any equivalents/successors) and Health and Safety
  • To research, investigate and provide feedback to the business on all new commercially viable building products and systems that could improve processes/be of benefit to delivery and that may present opportunities for cost savings, value engineering and differentiation with our competitors

  Knowledge / Skills

  • Extensive residential development experience and design management process
  • Track record of procuring consultants and detailed design packages and working with main contractors
  • Effective and proven negotiator with professional organisations
  • Proven leadership skills to manage a highly skilled and motivated team of design professionals
  • Enthusiasm, resilience, resourcefulness and a high degree of personal drive
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet the demands of a senior position
  • Good and maintainable network of contacts across all areas of operation
  • Recognise the importance of effective communication within the business and beyond

Qualifications / training

  • Educated to A-Level or equivalent
  • You will be qualified to degree level in a relevant subject
  • Accredited to a professional body
