Head of Planning

Urban Splash, Manchester

Permanent Position: £55,000 - £75,000 plus package

The Company
Urban Splash – one of the property industries most recognised names having won over 400 awards since their inception. They have been a beacon for place-making for the last 25 years, and have an outstanding reputation for their creative, and innovative developments and regeneration schemes.

Headquartered in Manchester, House is set to expand at an exponential rate over the next 5 years. This spacious, customisable range of House products are built using MMC off-site to fit the customers’ needs, improving cost efficiency, cuts down construction time and is more environmentally friendly than traditional housebuilding methods.

The business is very well-backed and has a very ambitious growth plan on the horizon across the whole of the country.

The Role
This is a newly created position due to the expansion of the company, with numerous upcoming projects across the country. From 1,500 modular homes in Birmingham to a 90’s office park on the quayside of Salford (and everything in between), you will need to get used to a varied workload with a mix of residential, commercial and employment schemes in urban and suburban locations, maybe with some strategic land promotion thrown in too.

Working with the acquisition and development teams, you will be pivotal in helping run all aspects of the planning sphere and helping to grow the business across the whole of the UK providing strategy, direction, and getting involved in a whole host of core planning components from initial site appraisals, the preparation and submission of major planning applications, section 106/278 agreements, discharge of conditions, s73 applications, and policy representations. You’ll be working with great colleagues and award-winning architects and master planners and technical teams in bringing forward some exciting development opportunities and seeing them through to completion.

Covering the whole of the country will offer an opportunity to build up your network of relevant authorities, consultants, and neighbourhood bodies in Urban Splash’s target areas of growth.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Project managing a variety of planning applications – keeping relevant internal and external stakeholders updated with progress.
  • Networking with relevant industry professionals on a regional and national scale – these can include local authorities, planning consultancies, councillors, and potential JV partners.• Working with the senior management team on planning strategy for current schemes and up-coming projects.
  • Maintaining your understanding of national policy, and regional policy in target areas the company are currently working in.
  • Leading on the planning team consultant appointments across the country to ensure a professional fit in terms of ethos, quality and culture.
  • Implementing new processes and procedures within the company to ensure visible planning strategy – this will help instil best practice and alleviate potential planning bottlenecks.

The Candidate
Urban Splash have a policy of “talent over experience” and this is a core value of the business. This means you do not have to have extensive property experience to apply and be considered – it would certainly help though.

You will need to be a successful planning expert with residential experience, and a solid understanding of national policy. Ideally, you’ll understand how local authorities tick, and have experience dealing with them in either a client or consultant capacity.

Being able to keep an open-mind is essential as a fair amount of Urban Splash’s projects have been called “impossible” before – this planning role is not for the faint-hearted. It would certainly help if you are able to juggle a variation of policy, development control issues, multiple applications and possibly even appeals at the same time – multi-tasking goes very far at US.

Ultimately, we are looking for a personable, pragmatic, conscientious, commercial, detail-orientated professional who will be able to add real value to the company with their knowledge and expertise.
