The Inn

Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court which have the exclusive right to call men and women who have completed the necessary academic qualifications, to the Bar of England and Wales. This entitles them, after a period of pupillage (vocational training), to practice as Barristers. The Inn holds numerous events and functions throughout the year and is also available for private hire.

The Estates Department

Middle Temple’s estate consists of an interesting and historically important collection of buildings ranging from Middle Temple Hall built in 1570 through to post war properties constructed in sympathetic style in the 1950s. A large number of the buildings are listed and together with associated courtyards and gardens, all sit within ‘The Temple’ conservation area. The Estates team is charged with the maintenance and upkeep of an important and unusual estate in central London, comprising significant properties which are let both to commercial tenants (typically, but not exclusively, Barristers’ Chambers) and as residential units for members of the Inn, as well as the buildings of the Inn which range from an Elizabethan Great Hall to a library, gardens, meeting and conferencing facilities and its offices. The income generated from these properties is used for the maintenance of the Inn itself, continuously improving our portfolio, and to support the wider objectives supporting the legal profession. The team are based on site and are responsible for managing all aspects of running the estate from routine maintenance through to capital refurbishment projects and property acquisitions.

The Role

At this challenging time for the property market, we need an individual with real flair for developing strong relationships with tenants and an entrepreneurial approach to help identify the best approach to reletting vacated accommodation and sustaining our revenues. Experience in managing rolling Maintenance programmes and one-off refurbishment projects, and a strong understanding of planning law and practice is also desirable, as is having worked extensively on identifying and taking advice from professional consultants.
