If you're a Property Tax Professional with significant experience, we can offer you the opportunity to work at the heart of Shell’s Real Estate Team. Not only will you manage our UK Non-Retail Business Rates portfolio, you will also manage property taxes for our Netherlands Corporate and Residential portfolios and respond to any ad hoc challenges or opportunities arising across the wider EMEA team region.

Where you fit in

Real Estate (RE) delivers a competitive advantage to Shell through the application of leading-edge corporate real estate, corporate travel and business operations practices.

Shell’s RE team of professionals has established a strong reputation for delivering portfolio strategies, commercial transactions, capital projects, facilities services, operations support and travel support to the various Shell businesses in all parts of the world. Therefore, RE continues to seek the best talent to meet these dynamic business needs.

The Property Tax Manager is a role in the RE function designed to manage the property taxes for a portfolio of commercial, industrial and limited residential properties and assets. Situated within the Commercial Deals and Projects team, this role will report to the regional Commercial Deals & Projects Manager with extensive liaison with the RE Portfolio Managers in the team, senior owners and finance focal points for the relevant business assets.

What’s the role?

As Property Tax Manager, you will be responsible in ensuring that the property taxes for the assigned RE portfolio for the businesses and ventures are properly managed, that taxes charged are fair and reasonable, legitimately minimised and businesses are made aware of the budget implications from a property tax perspective of any business asset decisions, external impacts and legislative and government policy changes with follow up actions where necessary.

In this role, you will also be responsible for partnering with the businesses to identify cost saving and cost avoidance opportunities in a professional manner in line with Shell Business Principles and provide key input into portfolio plan feasibility studies when necessary.

At an operational and tactical level, you will have the support and services of appointed specialist rating agents. While at a strategic level, you will be expected to participate in relevant professional and trade bodies with a view to keeping abreast of relevant developments and representing the company and industry interests and perspectives on property tax matters.

Furthermore, your accountabilities include:

  • Identify savings opportunities through tax reliefs, appeals and legitimate cost avoidance e.g prior agreements.
  • Management of UK Rating Contractors for the UK Portfolio.
  • Management and responses to statutory compliance matters.
  • Provision of annual property tax budgets and identify and recommend accruals when appropriate.
  • Maintain the Property Tax database of valuations and liabilities.
  • Advice and support to businesses, Portfolio Managers and Finance of the implications of projects and transactions.
  • Management of the Shell reputation and risk at the property Tax interface.
  • Policy influence through national and international professional groups e.g. RICS, IPTI.

What we need from you?

We’re keen to hear from individuals who have RICS qualifications or equivalent. Beyond that, we’d want to hear from individuals who have the following:

  • Significant experience in a Property Tax orientated role.
  • Proven Property Tax record in dealing with a diverse range of properties in the private or public sector. Knowledge and practice in cost-based valuations and assessments and some specialised industrial properties would be an advantage.
  • Good collaboration skills and integrative leadership behaviours with the confidence and ability to lead and Chair professional and Industry body sub-meetings if required.
  • Skills conducive to providing good business partnering, stakeholder relationships and management with the confidence and ability to influence at a senior level.
  • Negotiation experience involving relatively complex cases is essential.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to spot relevant external trends, policy, legislative and practice changes and translate these into opportunities and responses.
