In the midst of a time of unprecedented change, there can be few roles that offer the scale, complexity and impact that you will find leading the Office of Government Property. We have the largest, most diverse estate in the UK – a £515bn portfolio touching everyday life for the whole country – meaning a real opportunity to be at the forefront of meaningful shifts in policy and practice. Our role is to provide leadership across the whole property function and wider public sector, to drive collaboration and transformation of the public estate for public benefit. The Government Property Function manages a variety of complex estate portfolios and transformation programmes to support the efficiency and reform of public services.

We are looking for an outstanding individual to be the Director General Head of Government, providing leadership and direction to a cadre of 4,000 property professionals across the UK and drive the continued transformation of the public estate. The Director General, Office of Government Property will provide senior, strategic leadership for the whole cross-government property function. You will work with a wide range of senior stakeholders inside central Government and in the wider public sector in the intelligent use of property to deliver better public services at lower cost to the taxpayer. You will play a key leadership role in a number of top government priorities with substantial national impact, including the Places for Growth programme which will move 20,000 civil service roles out of London, and the upgrade of the government estate to meet its target to be net zero carbon by 2050.

You will be an established leader with significant experience as a property professional, ideally with membership of a related professional body. You will demonstrate significant impact with stakeholders to the most senior levels of the sector with proven ability to persuade and influence beyond the realm of your direct control. You will comfortable engaging with Ministers, though previous experience is not a necessity, and work collaboratively to achieve greater impact. You will capably balance strategic development with more hands-on leadership, providing inspiration, direction and development to the teams that you lead. This is an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy not just on the public estate, but on the shape of the UK as a whole, and you will be driven by the potential impact this role could bring.
